Siem Reap, August 2020
More than a century has passed since the first photographic records of Khmer classical dance were taken at the sacred temples of Angkor. To commemorate this, dancers of the Cambodian Royal Ballet returned to the temples to pay homage to ancient dancers and reconnect with the spiritual energy passed down through generations of dancers and masters.
We were given the opportunity to document their journey and thus bore witness to admirable diligence of mind, body, and spirit. HERITAGE is our humble attempt to highlight the beauty and intricacies of Khmer Classical Dance and to honour the group of women who have dedicated their lives to keeping their sacred heritage alive.
A very special thanks to masters Pen Sokhoun, Soth Somaly, Penh Youm, Hul Poennary, Pen Sokchear Kim Bunthom, artists Sam Limsothear, Chorn Niratnak, Phay Channara, Vuth Chanmoly, Hang Sopheap, Sam Savin, Pol Chormalin, Nam Manoch, Yong Pichmanich, Praseth Vicheka, Pok Sovan, Chan Sreyleak, Hem Linda, Mam Vanvotey, and assistants Ouch Sopheak, Men Kimsour, and Meng Lyhour
